In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, who is the new professor of defense against the forces of evil?
Last Updated:
In the second installment of J.K. Rowling’s saga, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, a new professor of defense against the forces of evil is appointed at Hogwarts. He is Gilderoy Lockhart, a wizard who is very popular for his so-called heroic adventures and autobiographical books.
However, although famous for his exploits, it soon becomes clear that Gilderoy Lockhart is incompetent at teaching and hasn’t actually accomplished the feats he describes in his books. In fact, he has used amnesia spells to appropriate the adventures of other wizards.
Over the course of the school year, his incompetence becomes obvious, especially when he attempts spells that backfire, such as the famous episode where he causes an epidemic of Cornish leprechauns in the classroom.
Gilderoy Lockhart thus represents a striking contrast with the character of Professor Quirinus Quirrell in the first volume, who was shy and nervous, but hid a dark secret. Gilderoy Lockhart, meanwhile, is charismatic and narcissistic, but hides his inability to perform true acts of courage.
His role in Chamber of Secrets comes to a humorous and ironic end when one of his own amnesia spells, cast with a faulty wand, backfires and erases his memory.
