What is the highest mountain in the world?

The world’s highest mountain is Everest, rising to 8,848.86 metres above sea level. Located in the Himalayas, on the border between Nepal and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, Everest is an iconic peak for mountaineers the world over.

Known in Tibetan as Chomolungma and in Nepalese as Sagarmatha, Everest was first officially measured in 1856 by a British team led by Sir George Everest, after whom it is named. Climbing Everest is extremely difficult and dangerous, due to unpredictable weather conditions, the scarcity of oxygen at high altitude and the rugged terrain. On May 29, 1953, New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Tenzing Norgay became the first confirmed climbers to reach the summit of Everest.

Since that first successful ascent, thousands of climbers have attempted to climb Everest. While many have succeeded, many have lost their lives in the process. Everest continues to captivate and challenge climbers, symbolizing the grandeur and majesty of nature.
