Pyongyang is the capital of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, commonly known as North Korea. Situated on the banks of the Taedong River in the north of the Korean peninsula, Pyongyang is the political, economic and cultural heart of the country. This ancient city, whose history dates back over 2,000 years, plays a central role in Korean history, having been an important cultural center since the time of the first Korean kingdoms.
Today, Pyongyang is a symbol of the North Korean regime, with grandiose monuments such as the Juche Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and the Kumsusan Sun Palace, which houses the embalmed bodies of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il. These monuments reflect the Juche ideology, a doctrine of political independence and self-sufficiency established by Kim Il-sung, the country’s founder.
The city is also home to the government, the main military institutions and the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea. Pyongyang’s population is strictly controlled, and the city is often presented in the North Korean media as a model of communist society. Modern buildings, grand avenues and monumental infrastructures are highlighted to illustrate the strength and grandeur of the North Korean regime.
Despite its role as the regime’s international showcase, Pyongyang remains relatively closed to the outside world. Foreigners are admitted under strict surveillance, and information on the daily life of local residents is limited.
