Yerevan is the largest city in Armenia and its capital since the country’s independence in 1918. It is located in the western part of Armenia, at the eastern end of the Ararat plain, above the Hrazdan river gorge. The city is known for its pink architecture and historical monuments, such as the Republic Square, the Yerevan Opera House, the Surp Krikor Lusavoritch Cathedral, the Yerebuni Fortress and the Armenian Genocide Memorial. Yerevan is also the economic and cultural center of Armenia, home to many industries, universities, museums and festivals.
