Ankara has been the capital of Turkey since October 13, 1923, when it was officially proclaimed as such. The city is located in the central region of Anatolia and is the second largest city in Turkey after Istanbul.
Ankara is an important economic and political center for the country, with many seats of government, embassies, universities and businesses located there. The city is also known for its historical and cultural sites, such as the Mausoleum of Atatürk, the Ankara Citadel and the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations.
